Providing facility for a possible future upgrade is of utmost importance in a telecommunication system than in any other system. This is due to the fact that there has always been an upswing in the demand that is posed by the market. As long as humans want to be in touch with each other, there is scope for telecommunication. Hence, there is no limit that can be set as saturation for such a system.
A rigid system design fails to meet the exponential growth trends posed by the telecom market. Therefore, a new design was required, a design that would cater to the requirements of the present as well as the future. It involves careful and in-depth analysis of the area under consideration and extensive research using the past data. Though the future demand posed by the market bears very little correlation with the past trends, it gives the designer a basic estimate of the future demand that can be expected out of an area. There are numerous parameters that determine the future demand and it is a very difficult and cumbersome task to estimate it. Hence, another method is adopted wherein the estimation to be done is comparatively simpler.
Area code assignment is a very flexible method that gives ample room for a future upgrade. Using this, the Californian government has divided the whole coverage area into 33 areas. This was a result of dividing and re-dividing the area to give newer area codes. Area code 760 was the result of such a re-division. It was formed by splitting the already divided code area 619.
Area code 760 was officially announced on 23rd March, 1997. The growth in its subscriber base of area code 760 was such that within a span of ten years, it had reached its saturation limit. It was being difficult to allocate numbers to new users hence an alternative was sought. It was decided in April, 2008 that the San Diego County, under the area code 760, would be transferred to a new area code 442. There was widespread resistance to the transfer, all across the San Diego County, which resulted in the conversion of area code 442 to be an overlay of area code 760. May 2009 saw the enforcement of the above change and all the users were expected to follow the 10-digit numbering scheme.
There are 9 counties that make up area code 760. They are Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Mono, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego. 733 exchanges serve the 127 cities, some of which are namely El Centro, Bombay Beach, Salton Sea Beach, Winterhaven, Salton City, Westmorland, Palo Verde, Adelanto, Amboy, Bodfish, Brawley, Bridgeport, Holtville, Independence, Indio, Nipton, Tecopa, Weldon, Westmorland, and Yucca Valley etc
