The state of California has a very efficient communication system. The net coverage area is divided into several smaller areas and each area has at least one exchange in it. Call originating from and terminating in a particular area have to be processed by the area exchange. The capacity of the exchange is determined by the user density in the area and a prediction is made while setting up the transmission tower. To facilitate errorless and easy call routing, each of the newly formed area were assigned a code which was local to the area. This code was to be used only when the calling party resides in that particular area. One such code area is area code 530.



The area 530 was officially initialized in 1997 and the surplus of the data was transferred to the new area under the new code.



Alpine, Buttle, Corusa, El Dorado, Glen, Humboldt, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Sehama, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba are the various counties that come under the area code 530. It has 236 cities under it, some of which are Cherokee, Dayton, Durham, Bangor, Biggs, Brush Creek, Merrimac, Magalia, Gridley, Chico, Berry Creek Big Bar, Gazelle, Greenview, Etna, Mount Shasta etc.



Now let us see what happens inside an exchange when a user residing in area code 530 requests for a call. As soon as the user picks up the receiver, the exchange sends back a dial tone which indicates that the user is still connected with the exchange. As the user begins to dial the first three digits, the system at the exchange checks whether the code entered is for an international, inter-state or local call. Depending on the nature of the call, it is routed to the respective exchange. After all, call connection is nothing but communication between two exchanges.



If the code implies the call is for another country, the call is routed via the trunk lines to the destination exchange outside California and the foreign exchange then waits for the user to enter the remaining digits. If the code entered is not the international one but belongs to an area within California, for instance say 410, the call will be routed to the exchange which is present in the area 410. But if the code is for a local call, the area code 530 exchange waits for the remaining numbers to be fed in and directly routes the call to the calling party who also happens to be in the same area. This whole process occurs very fast and occurs simultaneously as the user dials the digits.



There have been cases in the past wherein the codes and the respective areas have been modified to suit the demand posed by the subscribers. The main hitch for a telecommunication system designer is that there will be a demand in growth but the area in which the demand is to be accommodated is constant. The designer is given the task of effectively using the given area without compromising much on quality of service. As the number of users increase, more congestion occurs and the signal quality deteriorates. This was the condition of area 916. There was a huge demand for connectivity in the area and it was beyond the capacity of the single code to satisfy it. Hence the area was split to give a new area code 530.
