California 310 Area Code
California area code 310 is mainly applied to Western Los Angeles which houses the South Bay. Catalina Island the most popular among them lies under the area code 310. In 1991 due to the increasing demands of better phone services, area code 310 was divided from 213. In the case of codes it always keeps on changing and developments occur at a rapid rate. As a result of this development it was again divided in July 2006 to form area code 424.
Residents who are under area code 310 have to dial the area code followed by the number because 424 comes under non-mobile area code in this region. The first split of area code 310 was along the Imperial Highway which is located near the border of the Los Angeles airport. 424 codes were specially designed for the regions near California South Bay. The governing bodies at first objected this partition because funds would go high when the supplies were re printed and ordered to show the phone number changes. But as the demand was high they finally gave in for the division.
When area code 310 was introduced, it became instantly popular than 213 because of its affluence of Beverly Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica and other parts of West Los Angeles. Nowadays 310 are used as shorthand for West Side of Los Angeles and the South Bay region of LAX. There are many area codes that are changed and updated very frequently but controversies follows only a few, and 310 were among those codes.
In 1997, the southern and eastern parts of area code 310 regions were changed under area code 562. Dividing often would lead to high cost problems and the business communities were in a rage, changing their phone numbers on every card, stationary and signage. Many of them even complained that their customers found it difficult to remember new phone numbers every time the government formed a revised plan. Due to this uproar, when area code 424 was introduced in 1999 it came as an overlay and not a complete change of the old area codes. The problem did not end, as the residents of Los Angeles had to dial the ten digit number also for local calls. This created discomfort and slowly a protest movement was organized under the champion Robert Scheer, a columnist of LA times. They suggested that the plans should be revised and proper arrangement and distribution of the codes should be done so that residents did not have much discomfort.
As a result of all these protests, the California Assembly passed the consumer area code relief act of 1999 in which the area code 424 was postponed. After seven years of re planning and discussions, finally in July 2006 the 424 overlay was implemented. All the phone numbers under area code 310 was either under 310 or 424. According to the new rule, ten digit local dialing became mandatory.
In short, area code 310 covers areas like Alondra Park, Athens, Avalon, Carson, Del Aire, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, Lennox, Lomita, Los Angeles, Brentwood, Harbor City, Malibu, Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Palos Verdes Estates, Redondo Beach, Torrance and Santa Monica.
